The
Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC) welcomes all
who are interested in our mission to preserve and share the history,
customs, and values of the Issei (first-generation Japanese) who came
to the United States, and particularly to Bainbridge Island, to make
a new life for themselves and their children. By recording our history
and culture and providing an outreach educational program, our organization
strives to promote better understanding and appreciation of the diverseness
of the United States, and the need for vigilant protection of our
civil and constitutional rights.
Our regular events include a summer picnic, a lunch to honor the Nisei,
and a Mochi Tsuki celebration. Ongoing projects are the Kodomo No
Tame Ni, "For the sake of the children" award winning traveling
photo exhibit, and the Woodward Fund, which supports projects dedicated
to civil rights topics. We also currently have three major projects
underway:

The
Nidoto Nai Yoni, "Let it not happen again," Nikkei Exclusion
and Internment Memorial: Located at the site where, on March 30,
1942, 227 Bainbridge Island residents were the first Japanese Americans
to be forcibly removed from their homes by the U.S. Army and sent
to internment camps. This historic site has recently been designated
as a satellite unit of the Minidoka National Internment Monument.
In Defense of Our Neighbors: A book by Mary Woodward chronicling
the story of Walt and Milly Woodward, publishers of the Bainbridge
Review in 1941, the only newspaper on the west coast to consistently
speak out against internment.
Oral History Project and Website Showcase: Since the 1980s
we have been recording the oral histories of our Issei and Nisei generations.
We plan to launch a new website in the summer of 2008 which will contain
a collection of photographs, artifacts, and short film clips from
our oral history collection to illustrate the personal stories behind
the exclusion and internment of the Nikkei from Bainbridge Island.
