Nishikawa Shodo Kyoshitsu

Nishikawa Shodo Kyoshitsu teaches students from kindergarten through High School, as well as adults the technique of Japanese calligraphy writing.

The students are taught to utilize pencil and bokuju (Japanese ink) with brush.

Every month students send their finished work to Japan and are graded using the exact license examination as same programs based in Japan to receive a ranking.

It is difficult to reach a high level of technical skill in only a few months or a year's time. Typically students will attend classes for 3 to 8 years before they can reach a level of competency.

It is my desire to teach students how to write Japanese calligraphy as well as teach them the importance of developing their ability to concentrate and to demonstrate patience as they perform this art form.

I have been learning calligraphy ever since I was 2nd grade, so it has been 6 years now. My mom encouraged me to start learning calligraphy because she wants me to keep in touch with my Japanese heritage.

I have learned the Japanese characters little by little, but more importantly what I have learned is concentration. If you don't have concentration, the characters become a mess. Because of this concentration I learn much better in school and sports. I enjoy calligraphy very much and want to continue learning it because I will also learn much about Japanese culture.

Middle School Student: Willy Matsuda

I decided to join the Japanese calligraphy class because my son was having so much fun. My son is in the class for kids and I am in the class for adults.

When I started, I just wanted to be able to write my characters correctly and beautifully, but as I continued in her class I enjoyed the atmosphere and the calming experience of writing.

In addition to calligraphy, we learn classic Chinese character and the original Japanese symbols, called "kana". After practicing "Nichijoseshu", I have great respect for the exquisite beauty of the kana. It is also interesting to learn the art of making my own original letters or words. You only use your sense and creation for this.

Mrs. Nishikawa is a wonderful teacher. She gives advice, corrects, and teaches techniques on writing smoothly and delicately. I am very happy that I found this class. I have made many great friends and have an opportunity to enjoy the art of calligraphy with my son.
