Saganishiki - Jan Paul

(Photos Courtesy of Jan Paul)
Textures by Jan were started in 1973 after Jan Paul received her bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Idaho. Weaving was a major part of her studies and she has woven professionally every since. After taking a class in the art of Saganishiki weaving from Mihoko Karaki of Tokyo in 1990, she has been weaving this specialty of Saga and selling the jewelry she makes. In March 2005, Jan's jewelry was featured in a Saganishiki exhibit in Saga, Japan.

In June 2006, Jan won an award for a Saganishiki piece in the "Small Expressions" exhibition at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, Grand Rapids, MI.

Saganishiki is woven with silk thread on a metallic or lacquered paper warp. The wife of a feudal lord, Lord Nabeshima of Saga, she needed something to fill her empty hours, developed the technique in 1820. The shimmering small handbags, obis and accessories are seen in kimono sections of the better department stores in Japan. Saganishiki is also a favorite state gift from the government.

The technique will be demonstrated and pendants, brooches, earrings, barrettes, pillboxes/sewing kits and a few wall pieces will be for sale'
