Located inside the Washington Park Arboretum, the Seattle Japanese
Garden is a 3 ½ acre authentic stroll garden inspired from
the expansive landscapes of the Edo period strolling gardens. Designed
by Judi Iida, the garden opened in 1960 and is considered one of the
top six Japanese gardens in North America (Japanese Garden Journal).
The Shoseian teahouse is located inside the garden where Chado (the
way of tea) public demonstrations are presented April through October
by the Urasenke Foundation. The garden is host to many Japanese festivals
and cultural events throughout the season. Complimentary tours are

The Japanese Garden is moving forward with construction of the new
Gatehouse Entry Structure during the 2008 season after a vigorous
fundraising campaign raising over a $l million in addition to $450,000
provided by Seattle Pro Parks levy. The project will be completed
in spring 2009 and will include restrooms, a meeting room, space for
a gift shop, and expanded maintenance and ticketing facilities. The
garden will remain open during the construction. Watch for an expanded
schedule of festivals, events, and seminars in the 2009 season.
