Located inside the Washington Park Arboretum, the Seattle Japanese Garden is a 3 ½ acre authentic stroll garden inspired from the expansive landscapes of the Edo period strolling gardens. Designed by Judi Iida, the garden opened in 1960 and is considered one of the top six Japanese gardens in North America (Japanese Garden Journal).

The Shoseian teahouse is located inside the garden where Chado (the way of tea) public demonstrations are presented April through October by the Urasenke Foundation. The garden is host to many Japanese festivals and cultural events throughout the season. Complimentary tours are provided April through October. For a complete schedule of events you may visit www.seattle.gov/parks/parkspaces/japanesegardens.htm.

The Japanese Garden is moving forward with construction of the new Gatehouse Entry Structure during the 2008 season after a vigorous fundraising campaign raising over a $l million in addition to $450,000 provided by Seattle Pro Parks levy. The project will be completed in spring 2009 and will include restrooms, a meeting room, space for a gift shop, and expanded maintenance and ticketing facilities. The garden will remain open during the construction. Watch for an expanded schedule of festivals, events, and seminars in the 2009 season.

The Seattle Japanese Garden is located at 1075 Lake Washington Blvd. E., one block north of the Madison St. entrance. Admission is $5. adults, $3. seniors, college students and disabled. Children under 6 admitted free. For additional information call the garden at 206-684-4725.
