Seattle Japanese School PTA

In Japan there is a tradition of having a "matsuri" or festival every fall. Come by our booth and experience Japanese culture. The matsuri will provide an opportunity for you to enjoy the art of Japanese calligraphy. Visitors will get to use a brush and ink to write Japanese characters. Dress up in a "yukata", common attire worn at a matsuri, and get your picture taken. We also have a fun fishing game for water balloon yo-yo's. Be sure to drop by our booth sponsored by the Japanese School PTA.

The Seattle Japanese School meets on Saturdays at Sammamish High School (K-12th grade classes) to provide Japanese style curriculum to students who reside in this area. Over 500 students are enrolled in the school. Students learn Japanese language, mathematics and social studies in Japanese with Japanese textbooks. Middle school and high school students also study science.

The school is financially supported by the Japan Business Association of Seattle (JBA) and tuition collected from students. In addition, the school is accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and is headed by a principal and vice-principal who are sent from Japan by MEXT. The campus, which is used by the Seattle Japanese School, is rented from the City of Bellevue. In appreciation for the support received from the local community, the Education Tour in Japan Program is offered by JBA to teachers in the Bellevue School District. These teachers travel to Japan to further strengthen ties of friendship and education between Japan and the U.S.
