Temari
is a Japanese decorative ball made from a spherical core wrapped with
threads. Although originating as a children's play toy, it became
an art form. It can be displayed on a tabletop, in a basket, or hung
by a string (it makes a unique decoration on a Christmas tree).
Various patterns are stitched onto the surface of the sphere; however,
unlike cross-stitching, patterns are made from precise geometrical
divisions of the spherical surface, exhibiting symmetrical beauty
accentuated by the thread color combinations. The numbers of possible
patterns are virtually limitless, providing artists' freedom to express
their imagination on this unique canvas.
Temari is enjoyed by people with a wide range of skill levels. Although
simpler patterns are relatively forgiving and enjoyed by beginners,
more intricate patterns require the mastery of geometrical space and
technical precision in addition to artistic imagination.
Yumiko Furuyama is a temari artist, certified by Japan Temari Association
(Nihon Temari Kai), requiring rigorous training and demonstration
of creativity and technical artistry. She aspires to continue the
preservation and innovation of the art of temari.
Furuyama Sensei offers classes for students of all levels, passing
the art and enjoyment to both current and next generation.
