Bellevue Kendo Club started in 1989 and works through the City of
Bellevue Parks Department, which offers the kendo classes. Kendo is
the modern derivation of several styles of classical sword schools.
It is both a martial art and a sport. The Bellevue kendo classes focus
is on the martial arts portion of kendo teaching solid basic skills,
as well as manners and discipline. This focus also has created a number
of champions on the sport side of kendo.
The head instructor is Jeffrey Marsten, Kyoshi, 7th Dan. Marsten Sensei
passed the Japanese national Kendo examination in Kyoto, Japan, May
3rd, 2001. Out of 1,266 candidates, only 216 passed this rigorous
examination. Marsten Sensei is also kantoku (head coach/manager) of
the Pacific Northwest Kendo Federation Team. At the national championships
held on July 5th/6th, the PNKF Senior Youth Team won the championship,
being the first non-California team to win a team event since the
tournament started in 1978. The PNKF team members also won or placed
in various individual divisions.
Bellevue Kendo offers instruction for ages 8 years and up and the
classes are on a quarterly basis. Registration is through the City
of Bellevue Parks department. The next beginning class will be in
October 2004.
