Cascade Kendo Kai classes are held at Mercer Island's Community Center
at Mercerview Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and in Seattle,
at the Nisei Veteran Committee (NVC) Hall at 1212 South King St. on
Saturday.
Paul Kurose is the school's head instructor. Kurose Sensei, a practitioner
of Kendo for over 55 years, is one of the two active sensei associated
with this area's first generation of kendoists. Kurose Sensei was
a recipient of the 2008 Consul General of Japan award for his dedication
to Kendo furthering Japanese culture in the Pacific Northwest.
Gary Imanishi is the associate instructor. Imanishi Sensei, the
grandson of Kendo pioneer, Umajiro Imanishi Sensei, six-time national
competitor placing 2nd in 2005 and top eight in 1978. He was a member
of the U.S.A. national team in 1979 competing at the 4th World Kendo
Championships in Sapporo, Japan.
Joining Imanishi Sensei from Cascade Kendo Kai at the 2008 USA national
competition in Las Vegas was Bryan Imanishi (3rd, 2005), Taryn Imanishi,
Masayuki Mizuuchi, Frank Wessbecher, Roger Yau, and Patrick Yoon.
