ABOUT KENT SCHOOLS JUDO TEAM ...

Founded in 1955 by George Wilson, the Kent Schools judo team has the distinction of being the first high school judo program established in the U.S. The aim of the program is to bring the benefits of studying this venerable martial art turned sport of Japanese origin while competing in high school varsity athletics.

The program is co-ed and team membership is open to all students enrolled in the district between 9th and 12th grade in all four Kent area high schools. Over 140 students completed the 2007 Judo season in Kent. As a spring season sport the team trains daily starting in February and ending in May.

Judoists are taught the basics of safety, including ukemi (break falling), then advance to mastery of throwing, grappling and application of submission techniques. The Kent Schools Judo Program consists of four high school teams, Kent-Meridian, Kentridge, Kentwood and Kentlake. All four high schools participate in the newly established eight team Puget Sound High School Judo League. Each team has 15 league matches per the spring judo season.

The judo season ends with State and National competitions. A centerpiece of the Kent Judo Program is a bi-lateral cultural and sports exchange with the All-Japan H.S. Judo Federation. Team members host Japanese judoists in the spring, and a delegation of Washington judoists visit Japan in the summer.

Character development is key in the study and practice of judo. A bevy of assistant coaches and alumni create a first-rate learning environment. The team's motto is "Citizens & Champions." Past coaches include Douglas Graham, former USA Judo Grand Champion & Pan American Gold Medalist, and Prof. George Uchida, 1972 Judo Olympic Coach for the U.S.
