In
its simplest term, iaido is the art of drawing, cutting, and returning
the katana (sword) to the saya (scabbard). Following the warring era
in feudal Japan, master swordsmen developed schools and fighting styles
that included zen and the ethics of loyalty, honor and discipline.
The word iaido is an esoteric term void of any connotation to swordplay.
Iaido can be said as meaning the "Meeting of the Mind".
Iaido requires not only the physical dexterity and skill to handle
the sword; iaido is a reflection of one's character. Performing iaido
requires a harmony of both body and mind. Those who practice iaido
with a pure heart and clear mind, will not only find satisfaction
in their iaido training, they will also find a peace and satisfaction
in their personal life, for through iaido, one practices a life style,
and a way of life that can be learned and enjoyed over a lifetime.
