Jujutsu
is a traditional martial art that was slowly devised during hundreds
of years of warfare during the Heian period (784 - 1184). The term
"jujutsu," however, came into existence in the latter part
of the 16th century, much later than its combative techniques. Loosely
translated, "jujutsu" can be defined as "the art of
gaining victory by yielding or pliancy."
The tactics of jujutsu may be either offensive or defensive. They
usually involve unarmed combative techniques that are used against
armed or unarmed enemies. Various weapons, however, can be used. Tactics
include throwing, striking, kicking, kneeing, choking, joint locking,
holding and binding an enemy, and use of certain weapons.
