Our ancestors believed that we used the ocean like a bridge to
meet people and make peace with all nations. Our Taiko drums send
forth a wish and a feeling of peace to each individual with an echoing
harmony of our sincere appreciation for each and every person.
It
was in 2002 at the New Year's Party of Okinawa Kenjin-kai that our
first Okinawa Taiko performance was done by six (6) members led by
Hannah Jack. In March 2006, the O.K.K. Taiko Group was officially
established as Okinawa Kenjin-kai's Taiko Group for the purpose of
bringing knowledge and enjoyment of Okinawan music & dance to
the local population. We perform traditional Okinawan Eisa Taiko;
drummers hit their taiko drums while dancing and parading to the accompaniment
of Okinawan Bon-Odori Music (Eisa).
The current Chair is Mia Slattum (North area) and the Vice Chair is
Dave Bartley (South area). Our group consists of taiko drummers and
dancers, and we now have about 35 members. If you are interested in
joining O.K.K. Taiko Group, please contact us. (Note: You do not have
to be an Okinawa Kenjin-kai member to join O.K.K. Taiko Group.)
O.K.K. Taiko Group has been active performing in the Northwest area
at various occasions such as at functions of Okinawa Kenjin-kai as
well as for other local cultural and community groups and events.
In 2008, O.K.K. Taiko Group is scheduled to perform before the game
of the Seattle Mariners in the Safeco field.
Please come and enjoy our passionate and dynamic performance!
