Hear ukuleles and songs from Hawaii and Japan, listen to the uniquely
Hawaiian sound of the slack key guitar and be entertained by featured
vocalists when the Nikkei Horizons Ukulele Band returns to the Aki
Matsuri performing arts stage on Saturday, September 6th. The band
is comprised mostly of Japanese American seniors and got its start
through the ukulele classes offered by the Seattle Nikkei Horizons
continuing education program. Age does not matter with ukulele players
and many in the band are in their 70's. The ukulele classes are taught
by Dr. Jack Akamine, his wife Helen, and John Iwai. Bandleader Akamine
imparts an authentic Island flavor to the band having been raised
in Hawaii and with over 50 years of experience playing the ukulele
and guitar.
The band plays for audiences at retirement and senior centers, community
events and gatherings. At a recent special performance, the band had
the privilege of playing on the same program and meeting the ukulele
virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. The band size fluctuates depending on the
nature of the performance and availability of band members
