2011 Aki Matsuri Information


The 14th Annual Aki Matsuri


A celebration of Japan's rich cultural heritage
presented by the Eastside Nihon Matsuri Association (ENMA)

Saturday, September 10 (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.) and
Sunday, September 11 (10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), 2011

(Please note that some workshops/lectures/seminar require registration and fee.)



Japan comes to the Bellevue College (BC) for a weekend! A two-day program of Japanese cultural and educational events for all ages!


The matsuri includes 2 full days of on-stage Performing Arts, Martial Art demonstrations by local dojo members, Puppet Shows based on Japanese Folk Tales, Tea Ceremony demonstrations, more than 80 exhibit booths, and Japanese food booths. There are workshops on bonsai, taiko, and Japanese Gardening Presentation. Browse through "Nomi-no-ichi … a Japanese style flea market" to make a lucky find! Meet with Aki Matsuri Mascot and friends!

The 20th Annual Koi Show by the Washington Koi & Water Garden Society will be held at Bellevue College during Aki Matsuri Weekend.


2011 Aki Matsuri features
:


Wonderful World of Leather ... A pioneer leather artist, Keiko Murakami from Chiba, Japan will be one of the featured artists in the 2011 Aki Matsuri. She will exhibit many of her works and explain about the "Wonderful World of Leather".
     
Kimono Presentation and Yukata Show ... Kimono Coordinator, Ugawa Yu and 5 assistants from Kobe, Japan will conduct the Kimono Presentation and Yukata Show with local volunteer models. This will be Ugawa-san's first Yukata Show in the USA. Previously she has presented shows in Kobe (Japan), Florence (Italy), and Rotterdam (Holland).
     
Mikoshi Gishiki ... A full-scale Omikoshi from Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America will be on display during the two-day events. From 12 PM on September 10 (Saturday), there will be a Shinto ceremony to purify the Omikoshi followed by the Omikoshi procession in the campus courtyards. Matsuri visitors are welcome to join in! This would be a really good experience. Don't miss it!
     
"Great Grandfather's Drum" is presented at Aki Matsuri as a donation for Japan Relief by Opticus Media and producers Victoria & Cal Lewin, Maui Taiko, the Fukushima Kenjin Kai, Peace Winds of America, Regional Taiko Group, Lake Washington JACL, and the Eastside Nihon Matsuri Association. Donations benefit the Northeast Japan (Tohoku) recovery efforts.
 
Where else can you shop, eat, and browse so many diverse and interesting family activities in one location? Yes, there really is something for everyone! The matsuri is an excellent opportunity to experience some of Japan's rich culture heritage as we bring "Japan to the Bellevue College for a weekend!"
