A bonsai is a manageably small, somewhat idealized representation
of a mature tree in nature that artistically suggests a particular
scene or mood and elicits an emotional response because of its beauty.
The artist creates in a horticultural relationship with the plant
material an image by skillfully manipulating and directing growth.
As an art form, bonsai is a qualitative term expressing a high level
of achievement accomplished over a significant period of time.
