Presentation Lecturer: Mr. Masashige Toguchi |
Toguchi-san first experienced Japanese gardening at the young age
of ten years in exchange for food. His single parent mother was challenged
to provide enough food for four hungry youngsters following the very
difficult war years.
Fortunately his next door neighbor, a retired gardener referred to
by Toguchi-san as Ojii-san (Grandpa) trained him by putting him to
work in his own private garden. "Ojii-san" was getting too
old to maintain his garden; so realizing his neighbor's plight; he
was willing to train Toguchi to do the gardening after his school
days, during days off from school, and vacation time in exchange for
food.
Due to this extensive "on-the-job" training, Toguchi-san
had become a very good gardener by the time he was a high school student.
He received thorough specialized training in the general sculpting
of Japanese Garden Tress (Niwaki), and specifically the proper care
of Pine Trees (Momiage - the removal of dead needles in the fall &
Midori - "green picking" of needles in the late spring).
Now Ojii-san suggested Toguchi-san go to work and make some money.
He referred him to his "old clients" whom he could no longer
serve, and before long Toguchi-san was making some money, and had
enough work to bring some friends in to assist. His mother was very
pleased and happy, thanks to Ojii-san's very strict and irreplaceable
lessons and training that he never forgot.
Toguchi-san is now sixty eight (68) years of age, retired and approaching
the age of his mentor. But before going to see him up there, he wants
to pass on to others some of the Japanese Garden design and maintenance
training he received from Ojii-san; especially to those of us in the
West. He sees many people in Europe, the Americas and many other parts
of the world having difficulties making and maintaining a proper Japanese
Garden of their own. He believes he understands many people in the
West cannot create a proper Japanese Garden due to the following two
main reasons: a) partially incorrect information being disseminated
through some of the available published information, and b) not enough
qualified expert person(s) to instruct, teach, and guide.
Toguchi-san's wish is to introduce you to "What it takes to make
a Japanese Garden" with the hope many can learn to create their
own Japanese Garden, and enjoy it for many years to come.
